Use untimed practice when the main goal is understanding a concept. Use timed practice when you also want to evaluate pacing and decision-making under a limit. Both can belong in the same study plan.
Start with the question you want the session to answer
If you are learning Bayesian calculations, an untimed session gives you room to write the branches and explain each step. If you understand the calculation but consistently spend too long on it, a timed session helps you identify that pacing problem.
During an untimed session, commit to an answer before opening the explanation. Looking up the answer while choosing changes the task into a review exercise. Review can be useful, but its percentage correct should not be interpreted as independent performance.
Introduce timing in manageable sets
Choose a time limit appropriate to the official instructions for your examination and the number of questions in the set. Use a smaller mixed set first if needed. Record whether difficulty came from knowledge, reading the vignette, calculations, or repeatedly changing an answer. Review afterward without the clock.
If you rushed past a key word, identify it. If you spent too long between two options, work out which clue should have separated them. Do not assume that doing more timed questions automatically repairs a content gap.
Combine formats across the week
EveryGene Academy supports timed and untimed practice. Use focused untimed sessions for weak concepts and mixed timed sessions to practice applying knowledge across topics. Between question sessions, retrieve condition information using 101 Must-Know Genetic Conditions flashcards. For calculations, write out examples from the free Math Workbook.
Keep scores in context
A repeated set may reflect familiarity. An untimed open-resource set measures something different from an unfamiliar timed set. Use those differences to guide your next session. EveryGene practice scores are not validated pass predictions, and practice settings should not be described as exact replicas of a certification examination.
Next step: Choose one concept-learning session and one mixed application session for the coming week.
